Passion for improving health

Town & Country Compounding exists today because of Owner Pharmacist John Herr's passion for helping patients with their challenging medication problems.

John saw over and over how he was able to help improve patients’ day-to-day lives with customized medications.

John considers himself an integrative pharmacist who has extensive expertise in multiple areas of medicine and disease state management. He is considered by his peers across the country and by physicians he works with to be a top expert in the compounding industry.

Our History

It all began at Town & Country Apothecary on Ridgewood Ave. (pictured)

When John was in pharmacy school at St John’s University, he had a dream of one day owning his own pharmacy.  He accomplished that goal early in his career when he purchased Town & Country Apothecary in Ridgewood, NJ. The pharmacy was well-known in the area for its stellar customer service, retail prescriptions, and high-end luxury cosmetic lines.

The need for customized compounded medications grew, and John impressed doctors with his clinical knowledge and expertise. He observed how compounded medications helped unique populations of patients who had nowhere else to turn for their challenging often complicated medication needs. John needed more lab space to create more complex compounds.

In the early 2000s, John opened Town & Country Compounding Pharmacy around the corner from Town & Country Apothecary.

He expanded and opened Town & Country Compounding Pharmacy, a “compounding- only” pharmacy right around the corner from the original pharmacy.

Compounding was the focus of this pharmacy, and filling traditional retail prescription medications was left to the Apothecary (which he eventually sold, to devote 100% of his time to the art of compounding)

Upon continued growth, Town & Country Compounding Pharmacy moved to the current location in Ramsey, New Jersey further expanding with new, highly advanced laboratories.

What is a Compounding Pharmacy?

Medication is not one-size-fits all, and mass produced commercially available drugs may not work for patients for various reasons.

Certain drugs, combination of drugs, concentration of the drugs, or specific dosage forms that the patient needs may not be commercially available at a traditional retail pharmacy. A compounding pharmacy can customize the ingredients, strength, form, flavor and more.

Why would someone need a prescription for a compounded medication?

Commercially available drugs are the mass-marketed drugs that you can find at retail chain pharmacies. Those drugs are made in specific dosage forms and come in particular strengths. Suppose you need something that does not fit in that category, especially with a sudden condition or illness. In that case, a compounding pharmacy can really make a difference in your life.
